Children at Southfield have a dedicated Guided Reading session every day in addition to the daily Literacy lesson.
During the Guided Reading sessions the class teacher works with small groups of children everyday. These focus sessions allow the teacher to support the children in reading challenging texts and enables them to make accurate assessments that will inform future teaching.
Groups of children that are not working with the teacher are engaged in other reading activities that promote independent learning and also help them develop strategies to get the most of their reading. These activities include: making links about what they have read to real life, summarising the main parts of what they have been reading and regularly sharing what they have learnt with others.
